The client (Director of K-12 Science for DC Public Schools) requested a few small projects over a year. The underlying theme for the entire package of designs was a "Stranger Things" style logo for his Science dept.
The first request was a brand/logo and Save-the-Date for a professional development event for science teachers. This event was described as a "ComicCon for educators" and had a superhero theme for its inaugural year. Hoping to enhance the visual experience, the client wanted to take the event graphics up a notch for its second year. Stranger Things was huge in 2018 and the client wanted to play off the hype to engage his audience with a "Science Things" tagline.
Deliverables included a "SciCon 2.0" logo and Save-the-Date card.

A few months later the client reached out hoping to create t-shirts for his team to wear around the office. A modified version of the logo was created using a font that was visually similar to the Stranger Things brand.
Due to the popularity of the Science Things t-shirt, the client asked for an updated design. This time, he wanted to include the branding for DC Public Schools, more specifically he wanted a logo for the Science Department. During initial conversations, he wanted all of the elements to be incorporated, but we landed on a final design that kept the Science Things on the front and the more official DCPS logo on the back. I added the Mind Flayer to the Science Things to give the text a bit more dimension.
